After an excellent performance at the 2025 European Cup, Romanian pigeon fanciers are also performing very well in the World Best Pigeon ranking, the second international competition organized by the International Pigeon Federation (FCI). Thus, we are world champions in three categories and have climbed onto the world podium five more times.
The World Best Pigeon ranking is compiled annually by the FCI, following the same rules and standards as the Pigeon Olympiad or the European Cup. Rankings are made in eight distance categories (Speed, Middle Distance, Long Distance, Youngster, Yearling, All Round, Marathon, and Super Marathon), where each FCI member country can nominate three pigeons per category. The points are calculated based on a maximum of 5,000 pigeons.
Romanian Pigeon Fanciers, World Champions in the Super Marathon, Yearling, and Youngster Categories
In no less than three of the eight categories of the World Best Pigeon, Romanian pigeon fanciers are world champions. Thus, Sorin Săndulache from Bacău is in first place in the Super Marathon category, which involves two stages of over 900 km. Radu Dogaru from the Tulcea branch, the smallest of the branches in Romania, is in second place in the same category! Considering that a young female from the Solovăstru family in Suceava took fourth place, we were very close to having an entirely Romanian podium. Another first place was won by Mihai Anghel from the Argeș branch, world champion in the Youngster category, dedicated to young pigeons, where three stages of over 100 km totaling at least 450 km are required. The third first-place ranking belongs to the tandem Glodan Ciprian & Haidu Balasz from Maramureș, achieved in the Yearling category, which requires five stages of over 100 km, totaling at least 750 km.
Five More Top 3 World Rankings
In addition to the three first places, five other Romanian pigeon fanciers managed to place in the World Top 3. These are Narcis Găitan from Suceava, who is in second place in the All Round category, Artemie-Ilie Roșca, also from Suceava, in second place in the Marathon category, where the Sîrghi brothers from Vrancea and Catany from Timiș share third place with the same coefficient. Last but not least, Laurențiu Vîlsan from Prahova is in third place in the Long Distance category (three stages over 500 km).
Thus, we can confidently say that we dominated the World Best Pigeon ranking in 2025, being the country with the most podium appearances among all FCI member countries!
